What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture has existed as part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and is
often included as a treatment option in pain and physiotherapy clinics. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body. It stimulates the body qi (vital energy) to produce chemical, circulatory, muscular and nervous system changes. It can increase the release of the body’s natural painkillers, such as endorphin and serotonin, in the pathways of both the spinal cord and brain. This modifies the way pain-signals are received by the brain. It is believed that acupuncture can also have some psychological benefits, with some people
often noticing an improved sense of well-being.

Can I have acupuncture?
Most individuals can have acupuncture. However, every case is different, and the therapist will assess you before the start of each treatment. After which, an appropriate treatment plan will be formulated.

Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is generally very safe. Serious side effects are rare – less than 1 per 10,000 treatments. Single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used in the clinic.  However, you must inform the practitioner of your full medical condition. In particular, the following:
• Fits, faints
• Implants e.g. Pacemaker, hip or knee replacements.
• Bleeding disorder
• Taking any anti-coagulants or any other medication
• If you are pregnant. or planning to be pregnant.

Are there any side effects?
It is not possible to consider every possible complication to care. Although acupuncture is generally safe but, as with all types of healthcare interventions, there are some risks to care, including, but not limited to:

  • Increased relaxation and drowsiness can occur in most patients
  • Minor bleeding or bruising in 3% of cases
  • Numbness or tingling near the needling sites
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Burns and/or scarring with moxibustion or the use of heat lamps.
  • Bruising and/or scarring are common side effects of cupping.
  • Although the clinic uses sterile disposable needles and maintains a clean and safe environment, there is a possible risk of infection.
  • Other uncommon risks of acupuncture include infection, nerve damage and organ puncture, including lung puncture (pneumothorax).

After your acupuncture treatment
You should take it easy for the rest of the day and keep yourself hydrated with warm drinks. Avoid alcohol, large meals, heavy exertion, or very hot baths for the rest of the day. For most individuals, an acupuncture treatment is relaxing and restful, leaving them slightly tired but with no significant side effects.

Occasionally, it may be that some symptoms are aggravated for a short period of time, and you may also feel very tired. These reactions are a normal part of the healing process, but should not last much longer than 24-36 hours after your treatment. If you have any concerns, please contact the clinic. We will try our best to help.
