Multibed Community Acupuncture
The Hope Community Acupuncture Centre is a Low-cost, Multi-Bed Clinic set up with an aim to help support local residents living with Chronic illness. It was developed in partnershp with the Birchfield Big Local (BBL), a cohesive community partnership working to improve the lives and well-being of the residents of BBL.
Acupuncture is well known to be effective for a variety of conditions. Unfortunately, it is not readily available on the NHS and many families find private treatments unaffordable. Our goal is to make acupuncture accessible and affordable to more people using a multibed approach.
What is a Multi-bed Acupuncture clinic?
Within a Multi-bed clinic, several people are treated together in one large room. This is normal practice in China, where acupuncture is part of mainstream healthcare. Many people find it comforting to have others around them rather than being isolated in a private room (Stone, 2006). Group treatment also creates a collective healing energy that enhances the effects of each individual’s treatment, and it allows families and friends to visit our clinic together. It isn’t always necessary to remove clothes, as the most commonly used points are on the arms and legs. Trousers and sleeves can be rolled up, or a skirt moved to one side. Where necessary, blankets and screens will be available. Acupuncture is most effective when received frequently and regularly. Since acupuncture needles usually take 20-40 minutes to do their work, practitioners are able to place needles in one patient, leave them to relax into their treatment, and then move on to another patient while remaining in the same room to supervise the patient. By treating more than one patient the cost of each treatment can be reduced.
